Welcome to Severn Power
Welsh Power’s Gas-Fired Station Development.
Welsh Power is constructing a new 800MW gas-fired generation station, to be known as Severn Power, on the Uskmouth station site. Early works and site preparation have now been completed, and EPC (engineering, procurement & construction) contractors Siemens are progressing with the build. Test piling was completed in June 2008, with piling due to start in August 2008.
Prior to commencement, Welsh Power completed an exhaustive project assessment phase for the Severn Power plant, including extensive consultation with local people and other stakeholders regarding any concerns they may have in respect of the plant and its construction. We gained permissions for the development in Autumn 2007, and plan to commence production in 2010. the build is progressing to schedule.
The construction of Severn Power will see around 650 people employed. Wherever possible, these jobs will be in local suppliers and contractors who will be providing materials and services to the project. Once operational, Severn Power will employ around 40 people full time. Severn Power also hopes to work with local business some of whom already provide services to Uskmouth.

Outlined below are the key design features on the new Severn Power generation station:
Type of generation
The proposal is for a gas fired combined cycle gas turbine (known as a CCGT), 800MW in size — more than twice the output of the existing coal-fired power station, Uskmouth Power. The choice of plant is based on:
Environmental considerations (local and national)
- Gas generation emits half as much CO2 per megawatt of electricity generated.
- Gas generation also produces less of other pollutants such as nitrous oxide (NOx).
Generation shortfall in the region
- South Wales is a net importer of electricity.
- Local generation improves security of the grid system.
Efficient Generation
- New gas-fired generation stations are currently the most efficient type of power plants available.
